Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park is the oldest, best established and by far the largest National Park in South Africa. With more than 147 mammal species, 336 tree species and 500 bird species – it is without a doubt one of the best and most exciting game viewing areas in the world.
Mammals
The park provides the opportunity to spot the Big 5 with an estimated 1,500 lion, 17,000 elephant, 48,000 buffalo, more than 1,000 leopards, and both black and white rhinos. The large number of other exciting mammals roaming the savanna promise excitement for the duration of your safari. Predators in the park include lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog and jackal. All the iconic African big game can also be seen, including hippo, giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest and a large variety of antelope.
Vegetation
The park covers 16 large macro ecozones and includes Baobab sandveld, Mopani scrub, Lebombo knobthorn-marula bushveld, Mixed acacia thicket, Combretum-silver cluster leaf woodland on granite, and Riverine forest.
Look out for the following striking trees: Red Bushwillow, Common Cluster Fig, Fever Tree, Jackalberry, Delagoa Thorn, Lowveld Fig, Knob Thorn, Natal Mahogany, Marula, Mopane, Tamboti, Raisin Bush, Sausage and Lala Palm to name a few.
17 of 47 protected trees can be found in the park.
Birds
The park is a birding paradise and some birds cannot to be found elsewhere in South Africa. Look out for Hornbills, Starlings, Vultures, Rollers, Bee-eaters and Shrikes. Eagles are common: Bateleur, Martial, Black-chested Snake, Brown Snake, African Hawk, African Fish and Tawny are all regularly seen. Enthusiasts can look out for the big 6: Saddle-billed Stork, Kori Bustard, Martial Eagle, Lappet-faced Vulture, Pel's Fishing-Owl and Ground Hornbill. Birders will even be rewarded while visiting rest camps and picnic sites – do not forget your binoculars!
The Greater Kruger National Park
The Greater Kruger National Park consists of private reserves (180 000 hectares of land) with unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and include areas like Balule, Klaserie, Timbavati, Manyeleti and Sabi Sands. The same animals can be spotted in these areas as in Kruger National Park. No self-drive safaris are allowed in these areas, limiting the number of vehicles and people in the area.
